Microsoft Zune vs. Philips 30GB
While there is certainly no doubt who the big dog is at the moment when it comes to the digital music players, there is no dearth of selection for those looking for an alternative. If Microsoft is to achieve their goal of overcoming Apple’s stranglehold on the market and become THE digital music player they will first have to provide a cost-efficient, durable, and versatile music player to those looking for the alternative. One of the alternatives on the market for Microsoft to overcome is that of the Philips 30GB player that boasts some of the most impressive stats on the market. Here’s a comparison:
- The first category where Philips is able to one-up the Microsoft Zune is in the all-important world of battery life. With the Microsoft Zune you are expected to get around 14 hours of batter life on a full charge, while the Philips 30GB digital music player will get you around 18 hours of life. This may not seem like a huge loss for Microsoft, but it could be a way for them to gain market share by taking from Philips with a little improvement on battery life.
- Another area that Philips comes in and makes a slight dig at players like the iPod and Zune is with little accessories that are important to some people like this digital player’s voice recording capability. Whether that is for use in class to help with taking notes or to remind yourself of a few things to pick up at the store after leaving the gym, this could be a big help and is a small victory for Philips.
- Microsoft Zune will have the benefit of the Zune Marketplace to offer owners the opportunity to download music for a small fee per song or a “buffet package” with the Zune Pass. Philips is not completely in the dark as they offer PlaysForSure compatibility, which means Napster or Rhapsody could be your download service. In the beginning this will be a push, but in time Microsoft will build a powerful site to leave others in the dust.
- While Philips does offer a very nice 2” screen to view your music library or show off pictures to your friends, it does not have the ability to play video. This is where Zune separates itself hands down. If video capability is important to you then the Zune is currently head and shoulders above the rest.
- All digital music players seem to have the same options when it comes to hard drive, but one thing is curious about the Philips 30GB hard drive. While Zune boasts 30GB of hard drive for the potential of 7,500 songs, Philips offers the same hard drive with the potential for 15,000 songs. This may be something for you to read in the fine print, it sure does seem worth the time.
